It's Not "I've Got to", It's "I GET TO"

I think I've mentioned that I'm a sports fan? I come from a family of sports fans. We like sports trivia and we like to watch sports together. So it's no shock that this morning I was watching the first College Game Day of the season. They did a piece about motivational speakers coming to talk to the big college football programs like University of Alabama. It's become kind of a coup to get a famous name to come speak. They showed Koby Bryant, Charles Barkley, A-Rod, Derek Jeter, Michael Phelps speaking about their journey and how they got there.
But what caught my eye (and my ears) was a quote from Ernie Johnson. He's a famous sportscaster who works mostly for MLB and the Atlanta Braves but has also called basketball, football, golf and probably a lot more. I recognized his face and voice before they said his name. He told the players that he looks at his job as a broadcaster as something he gets to do, not something he's got to do. And this positivity puts a different spin on everything he does.
As a parent there will periodically be times you think to yourself, "I wish this wasn't happening". Parenthood does not ramp up slowly at birth. It takes off like a rocket the minute you leave the hospital. Your responsibilities as a caregiver start day one and often times I see parents become so overwhelmed. There's feeding the baby. Getting the baby to sleep. Setting up a safe environment for the baby. Managing financial obligations surrounding the expansion of your family. But here's the thing. You have a beautiful baby who's care has been entrusted to you. And now you get to take care of them even when some of those tasks aren't fun.
I also have finally come to a place in my career where I get to do this job. I get to help parents and children. I get to learn more every day about gross motor skill development. I get to play with babies. I get to blow bubbles, sing songs, and play. I think about friends who don't have jobs or don't have jobs that they love. I think about parents who have struggled to have children or have lost children. I feel like Ernie today! I get to do what I love and I hope you all feel the same when I come to visit. If your child is having physical challenges with gross motor skills, don't hesitate to call someone like me that loves what she does and will help you love watching your child meet their milestones at their own pace.
