Torticollis
Torticollis, or tightness on one side of the neck, is a common issue for many babies. It is common in multiples or babies that had intrauterine restriction. You will notice that your baby prefers to look to one side. Because of the muscle tightness baby may have difficulty with feeding, tummy time and rolling over. The earlier intervention starts the quicker issues can be resolved and flattening on the back of the head can be prevented.

Mobility - late crawlers or walkers
Is your baby demonstrating an alternative pattern for crawling; unable to progress from belly crawling to all fours; or not interested in crawling at all? Crawling emerges between 9 and 11 months and is vital for shoudler and hip strengthening. Walking emerges between 11 - 13 months but is not considered late until 18 months. I encourage any baby who is not showing strong signs of walking by 14-15 months to be seen by PT.

Developmental Delay
If your baby was born prematurely or had an extended NICU stay for any reason, delays in development of gross motor skills may occur. PT can help you navigate any issues with positioning and development of all skills in a positive, fun and playful way. Premies get an age adjustment until they are 2 years old. PT can help ensure your child is caught up with peers by that time.
My Approach
I started my career working with adults with neurological issues. When there is an insult to the brain it requires specialized therapy and handling skills to reteach the body how to move safely and correctly. I take these handling skills and use them to help "little people" learn their gross motor skills. I use toys, swings, exercise balls, wedges, benches and of course my hands to get babies into motion. Some children learn movement without facilitation but many need some handling to help them get started. I believe in using GENTLE play to help babies navigate their world. I encourage all parents and any other caregivers/family to be present in my sessions and learn these skills. I believe in a COMPASSIONATE approach that helps even the fussiest of babies discover that movement is fun and its FREEDOM. Often this takes several sessions as babies have to adjust to new people and new surroundings. I like to think outside the box and utilize whatever is motivating to your baby. This includes siblings, pets, feedings, hugs and even my famous James Avery jingling bracelet if that's what it takes. We will work together to achieve your goals for your baby and make movement FUN.
