Happy New Year to everyone who has visited Playtime Pediatric PT. Thank you so much for your support. It has been a pleasure to work with you and your babies. As we start a new year I'd like to talk to you about the 12 months ahead. If you have just had a baby you are beginning a wonderful journey. This may be your first baby. It may be your second or third baby. You're about to find out that all babies are different and achieve milestones differently. As I mentioned in my last blog there are some dates that I consider as necessary for PT intervention. But, if you have a newborn I'd like to offer another option.
Your baby sees it's pediatrician every 2 months during the first year for check ups and vaccinations. I am suggesting that babies and parents might also benefit from periodic wellness visits with a PT to formally check all gross motor milestones and answer questions parents may have about how to achieve them. It's often overwhelming to figure out how to do tummy time; how to position your baby to prevent a flat head; what toys to get; how to avoid container use. It's ALOT!
Would it make you feel better if you had a pediatric PT on your speed dial or text chain? Someone who you could check in with monthly or every other month to reassure you or give you some pro-tips? In the time before CoVid I would ask if you and your friends might like to have a play group where we demonstrate those tips and help demystify rolling over, sitting up, crawling and so much more? (I still hope that soon we may be able to meet in groups.) Because things like gymboree and music class are limited due to the virus, having a wellness check up with a PT makes sense. Before CoVid, moms used to meet in groups and felt like they had some back up; a friend to bounce ideas off; and other similar age children to determine if your child seemed behind. But now we've been relegated to our homes to decrease exposure. I am hearing it from all my parents - "My child isn't interacting with other babies like we used to."
I'll continue to write blogs in the new year to help give you information but what I really love to do is hold babies. If you are interested in learning how I play with babies or you think your child is not meeting gross motor milestones, feel free to call or text me so we can make a plan and get you the help you need.
