Independence Feels So Good - A 4th of July Post

Two and a half years ago I gained my independence by starting my own pediatric PT practice. I left the world of administrators who only cared about productivity; clinic hours; agency regulations and audits; team meetings; and most importantly the bonds of the insurance system. I now provide the level of care I see fit, for the length of time I feel is necessary, in the uniform that I feel comfortable in, with a level of compassion I want to give to my tiny clients and families. After so many years doing it someone else's way it feels good to do it "my way" (to quote Frank Sinatra). With independence comes pride in what I am building. It was hard to do at first but once I got the hang of it I was more and more motivated to make it grow. It changed me and gave me a renewed happiness in this field.
Those are exactly the things your little one feels when she gains her independence with gross motor skills. Many many babies cry during initial sessions - I have blogged about this before. Its their only way of telling us this new task is hard or scary. Its my job to find ways to ease their fears but sometimes they just fuss and cry and resist. It's okay! I repeat fussing and crying is okay when new tasks are introduced. With practice and assistance your baby will feel such pride when they achieve mobility and independence. Time and again I've seen that fussy and resistant baby turn to smiles when they realize they can rollover by themselves; transition sit to side sit and get a toy; pull up and cruise the couch; or walk around their home with siblings. Helping our children find independence in skills happens over and over again throughout life and it can be the most gratifying thing we do as parents.
Without getting political, it has become clear that many aspects of our lives are decided for us and result in outcomes we may not want. It feels so good to take some control of my career and make it what I always dreamed it could be. In turn I hope to bring knowledge and give you techniques to help your child get on the road to gross motor independence. If you have questions about gross motor development, a pediatric PT evaluation can help your little one be independent. Thank you for checking out my blog and website where it is easy to contact me with questions. I look forward to talking to you soon. Have a safe and happy 4th of July weekend.
Happy 4th Lisa, and what a great way to celebrate!! Your clients are lucky to have you!
